Graduate Interview Skills

Graduates facing toughest recruitment market for 20 years

Going to 50 interviews and still not getting a job may sound unusual but this is the situation being faced by Britain’s graduates. Students are leaving university courses with a serious lack of education about how to impress in an interview. And, in today’s unstable job market, graduates are going to find that first rung of the ladder becomes increasingly out of their reach.

According to a poll by interview skills trainer www.interviewgold.com, 79 per cent of people believe it is more difficult to get a job now than it was 12 months ago. This indicates just how tough job seekers are finding the market and this is more so for graduates with little or no previous experience.

University graduate Holly Stagg, who left Sussex University with a 2:1, went to numerous interviews with no success. “I wasn’t taught anything about getting a job at university,” says Holly. “And ended up going to interview after interview just to be told I didn’t have the interview skills.”

Holly had all the qualifications and skills necessary to do her dream job but was unsure how to convey these effectively until she signed up to the InterviewGOLD™ inteview skills website.

Holly learned the tips and skills needed to impress a potential employer and this helped her land her dream role for the National Magazine Company. “Interviewgold gave me really useful and achievable tips on how to behave,” she says. “I learnt how to prepare for an interview and how to really convey my character and capabilities.”

Holly is not alone in her struggle. Joe McDermott, founder of InterviewGOLD™, says many graduates are leaving university without the education they need to get a job. “So many graduates are applying for so few jobs these days,” says McDermott. “And the ones who aren’t quite as confident with their answers during an interview are going to find it an absolute nightmare to secure a job.”

For every job vacancy there’s bound to be hundreds of graduates applying with exactly the same degree, says McDermott. Therefore little things like the way you introduce yourself at an interview really stand out.
